Wearing a hijab is not always as easy an out as many may think! It might seem convenient to have your hair in any style, braided, chopped, dyed or even tangled underneath the hijab. But that is not always the truth! Wearing a hijab might be the best thing you could do for your hair to avoid manipulation and help in protection from natural elements such as wind, dust, sunlight and rain but this calls for extra hair care.

Due to being covered consistently, hair becomes really dull and frizzy further losing its shine and volume over time. More often than not, hijabis forget because it’s out of sight, thus out of mind, after all, no one will see it.

Here are tips to ensure optimal health for your hair when wearing a hijab:

  1. Do not tie wet hair!

Hijabi or not, tying up your hair while it’s wet is always a huge no-no. The roots of hair are going to be damaged over time as they do not dry naturally and will remain tied up for long hours. Damp hair makes the roots of your hair weaker being pulled by the hijab and the dampness does not escape thus causing irritation and dandruff.  As your hair dries inside the hijab, it’s going to look flat once the hijab is removed. 1. The Sun:

Feeding your hair some vitamin D once in a while is much needed for nourishing your hair. It might not be possible to sit outside with open hair but you can definitely find a spot in your backyard or open up the window. Keeping your hair covered for most of the time during the day rarely gets it any exposure to sun. Try to find time and sit for a minimum 30 minutes per week in sunlight to make sure your scalp and hair find that Vitamin-D.

  1. Maintain hair care:

Covering your hair is one step towards maintaining your hair but there is a lot more to it. We often neglect brushing it which leads to knots and breakage. So for healthy hair inside-out, we need to brush it regularly, get it trimmed every 4-6 weeks to prevent split-ends and use hair treatments and oil it every week.

  1. Hijab fabric:

Use skin-friendly fabric for your hijab – one that allows air to cross through.

Wash your scarves regularly to avoid dandruff and dust to build up in them. Prolonged use of un-washed scarfs may damage your hair. Have multiple pieces of scarf to easily switch them.

  1. Let your hair down:

Under the hijab, our hair is constantly tied throughout the day with no room to breathe. Once the hijab is removed, you must make sure to untie your hair and let it breathe, run your fingers through them and massage to get some circulation.

  1. Tie your hair loose:

Avoid tying your hair back too tightly, considering that your hair is covered up for so many hours. This can make hair strands weak, which can lead to hair fall. Go for a loose ponytail or a bun under hijab. You should also change your hair partition from time to time to prevent your hairline from thinning and falling.

There you have it, six hacks for healthy hair under that pretty hijab.
