What is Veganism All About?
So, those who do not eat any kind of meat, fish or poultry are categorized as Vegetarians; whereas those who (in addition to this) do not use any animal products and by-products as well – such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products – are categorized as Vegans.
However, the Veganista column is not here to create shock waves. On the contrary, this is more about a journey towards Veganism – and essentially more about the diet one can follow on this journey. It is all about living a plant-based life, wherein one does not eat food that has been sourced from any part of any animal’s body. These animals are not restricted to the commonly perceived products like beef, pork, chicken or fish. This also includes dairy products like milk, cheese, butter, yoghurt and alike. For those of you who could be mildly alarmed by this, Veganism also suggests that one avoid honey (as it is quite bluntly put) because it is a bee’s waste product! (Enough said!)
Keeping the above in perspective, Veganism (I believe) is what our ancestors followed as well. They lived on plants and grains primarily. If you set aside common myths related to taste, food options, nutrition sources and costs; you will soon realize how much more beneficial it is to live life as a Vegan – in almost every aspect. To begin with, just the idea of eating another living being / mammal is repulsive when you think about it. Add to that, the manner and conditions in which these animals are treated and misused in order to bring food to our dining table! Hence, Veganism is a more ethical way of living too.
In the variegated information to follow, you will know more about Veganism, the sources of vitamins and minerals (trust me there are tons – many more than you can imagine or even hear about), its benefits, recipes and real life changing stories…so keep watching this space for more…!
