As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, people are finding ways to cope with anxiety and stress which have been virtually inevitable during a long period of self isolation. While many people take advantage of the time to watch movies they have missed, some play online games and others turn to music to relax and free themselves from worries brought about by the uncertain situation.

Recently, a group of DJs in Doha started organising “We Love Qatar Online Sofa Party” every Friday via Facebook Live. Its very first virtual music event was held on Friday featuring 12 DJs doing one-hour music sessions each from their homes. The different segments offered complete musical experience to netizens, as the DJs took the audience on a journey to different musical styles and genres from the the 60s, 70s and 80s classics to old school and reggaeton to Afrobeat, techno and house music. “For next Friday, we already have some musicians who will be doing live solo singing and some will be on instruments. We have had a lot of international artists who also want to take part in our Online Sofa Party,” said organisers on the event’s Facebook page.

The weekly online event has been conceptualized to “keep busy and support this beautiful country that has allowed us to perform at various venues,” they said. “Let’s show our appreciation for the men and women in white and let’s also show a big appreciation to all the Qatari authorities that are working around the clock so hard during this time. Let us show them our appreciation by staying home and promoting #stayhome to everyone out there,” they added.

The organisers have urged DJs, singers and musicians to share a positive spirit with everyone at home every Friday through their participation in the online event. “Let us all come together and promote social distancing and bring the party for the people to their home right on their sofa,” they said.
Around the world artistes have been staging online concerts and performances not only to entertain people while in their homes but more importantly to encourage them to stay indoors and promote social distancing to prevent further spread of the pandemic which infected nearly two million and claimed the lives of over 100,000 people globally.
