Summer is already ending. Are you ready to go back to school?
As a student myself, I know the mixed emotions of going back to school. I’m excited because I’m going to see my friends again, meet new people, and learn new things. I’m also feeling dread because I’m going to spend my time listening to boring lectures and dealing with the heat inside our classrooms.
Going back to school means another year, another chapter, and maybe another set of classmates. We have to make a good first impression on our classmates and teachers. Wearing the right outfit is one of the ways to do so. Fortunately, the university I am currently studying in is not strict with dress code.
Which means more opportunities to flaunt my outfit even on a school day!
This back-to-school outfit was inspired by the sailor uniform worn by Japanese school girls. Since I am a student and have to be wise with my allowance, I am proud to say I got the dress and the shoes from an thrift shop. Then I topped it off with a dark blue fisherman’s hat.
Going back to school also means juggling schoolwork and extra-curricular activities. Most of the time, it just drains your energy, your money, and your will to live (just kidding!). Don’t worry. I got some tips that will help you survive school.
1.) Study topics in advance
It’s cliche but it actually works. This is the secret of some of your lazy classmates who still get good grades despite not doing anything. It actually has its benefits. You get to have a first view of the topic and you’ll know which points you need to improve on immediately. You can also bring up these points to the teachers during the discussion. This will also aid you in cramming less.
2.) Prepare what you’re going to bring
Notebooks? Check. Books? Check. Pencil case? Check. Accomplished yesterday’s homework? Check! This should be done so you won’t be wasting time looking for something the next morning. You won’t even panic, thinking you left something at home. Make sure to refer to your schedule also so you will know which books you will have to leave at home the next day. That way, you won’t be suffering back pains from carrying too much unnecessary books at school.
3.) Eat and stay hydrated
According to Snickers’ famous tagline, “You’re not you when you’re hungry,”. Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast. Always bring a water bottle and small snacks to school. You’ll perform poorly if you go to school on an empty stomach and a dry throat. You will end up more irritable and more stressed out also. So as much as possible, drink water and eat!
4.) Listen to music
Feeling stumped while reviewing your notes? Is everyone around making silly noises and you just can’t study? Put on those earphones and let music do its wonders. While you’re at it, I recommend you listen to classical music or to the instrumental version of your favorite song. Listening to music can lift up your mood and boost your concentration. Win-win, right?
5.) Take a nap
If you are one of those lucky ones who get good grades and can still sleep soundly for 8 hours, you’re blessed. Some people tend to pull an all-nighter since some people work better during nighttime. If you are one of them then there are times you go to school drained. Go ahead, take a nap. Napping is like a reset button. It helps you feel refreshed despite lacking sleep. But don’t sleep in class though!
6.) Spend time with loved-ones
Always make time for people who mean the most to you. May it be your friends, your family, or your special someone. You may keep yourself busy because of homework, studies, and club activities. But at the end of the day, they will still be there for you – in your victories or your losses.
6.) Unwind and reward yourself
Manage to ace an exam in Trigonometry? Finally done with that nerve-wracking thesis defense? Or just simply want some comfort after getting a ‘F’ score? You did a great job no matter what the results are! Stop giving less credit to yourself. Go buy yourself a box of pizza and watch your favorite movie. You deserve it!
7.) Accept stuff happens.
There are times we get frustrated over different things. We fail an exam even though we know we had studied hard for it. One of our group mates ruin the group project everyone worked so hard for. There are things that we cannot control. It’s hard to accept at first, but it’s not the end of the world. It will gradually get better. In the future, you might just appreciate why it happened.
8.) Pray or Meditate
Did you know that prayer is also a form of meditation? Meditation and/or prayer helps keep our minds balanced and relaxed. It’s also a good way to let go on what stressed you out. Personally, I don’t meditate like those who practice yoga but I pray to God frequently.
And that wraps it up! Learning doesn’t end in memorizing formulas or reading a long paragraph in five seconds. As long as we live, learning is a never-ending process. School is just one of the instruments to make us ready for the world outside the four-walls of our classrooms. Be sure to make most of your time as a student. You might just miss school once it ends.
Let us both have a blessed and a fruitful school year. May the force be with us. May we get good grades and good allowances.
